2009-10: In his third season with Rimouski, Fournier scored 13 goals and 37 assists for 50 points in 58 games. He added 76 PIMs during the regular season. In 12 playoff contests, Fournier scored 2 goals, 10 assists for 12 points.
2010-11: Saw his numbers drop a bit in his fourth year as a member of the Rimouski Oceanic. Fournier scored 12 goals and 32 assists for 44 points through 57 games. He was able to score a goal and an assists during 4 games in the post-season.
2011-12: With several young defense prospects already in the Red Wings system, the 20-year-old Fournier appeared in 13 AHL games with Grand Rapids; spending most of his first pro season in the ECHL with Toledo. He scored 1 goal with 3 assists and was an even plus-minus with 14 penalty minutes for the Griffins. In 55 games for Toledo he scored 2 goals with 16 assists and was minus-nine with 32 penalty minutes. He did not see any post-season action as neither Grand Rapids nor the Walleye made the playoffs in their respective leagues.
2012-13: Fournier spent most of his second pro season with Detroit AHL affiliate Grand Rapids and also played for the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. A healthy scratch during much of the NHL lockout – appearing in just four games – he played 30 AHL regular season games and scored 1 goal with 5 assists, finishing -1 with 23 penalty minutes. The Griffins finished first in the Midwest Division and captured the Calder Cup championship. Fournier played in six of 24 playoff games and was +2 with 1 assist and 2 penalty minutes. In 15 ECHL games with the Walleye he scored 1 goal and was +8 with 12 penalty minutes.
Talent Analysis
Talented offensively, the problem for Fournier is that he is a defenseman first and foremost, but sometimes he does not play like one. Able to make quick decisions with the puck and move it well, he sometimes struggles in his own end, especially when under pressure. A valuable tool on the power play, he would benefit tremendously if he can get larger and stronger on his skates in the coming years.
Future
Grand Rapids' crowded blue line makes it very possible that Fournier will split time between the AHL and ECHL in 2013-14, much as he has for the past two seasons.
